In this 1848 design for a clock tower, the artist known only as Monogrammist ANGJ used pencil and watercolor to render a classical structure for Zocher's new stock exchange in Amsterdam. The drawing, though architectural, is less about practical design than about the visual interplay of form and perspective. Notice how the symmetrical facade, rendered in delicate watercolors, contrasts with the implied weight of the building, reflected in the water below. The use of soft lines and muted tones flattens the image, challenging our perception of depth and materiality. The architectural plan to the left, in contrast, is all linear structure and depth. The clock tower itself, a symbol of time and order, is presented here in a way that destabilizes its fixed meaning. The drawing invites us to consider the work not just as a representation of a building but as a meditation on structure, representation, and the elusive nature of time itself.
