This is a writing sample with the capital letter J, made by Hans Strick, around the late 16th century. Created during the Northern Renaissance, this work reflects a period where humanist ideals intertwined with artistic expression. Strick’s work uses elegant penmanship and the text is as much visual as it is literary. The piece exemplifies the era's focus on virtuosity and skill, but there is also an emphasis on the aesthetic beauty of language and writing. The text reads as a meditation or soliloquy, and evokes themes of tranquility and anticipation of peace, ‘aspettando che ne sorga la tempesta’. The act of writing, particularly in such a decorative manner, becomes a performance of identity, skill, and cultural refinement. Reflecting societal issues, the work embodies the humanist values of the time. It also shows us the emotional and personal dimensions of the piece.
