This is Chris Lebeau’s ‘Bekledingsstof met dessin "Vliegend hert", in zwart op donkergroen’ – a furnishing fabric made with a repeating stag beetle design. It's all about the interplay between the black motif and the dark green background, creating a dense pattern that almost vibrates. Looking closely, the texture feels rich, the way the dark green peeks through the black, adding depth. There's a real physicality to the fabric, you can almost feel the raised texture of the beetles under your fingertips. Notice the slightly irregular edges, this adds a human element, like a handmade print. That one beetle, slightly off-kilter in the third row, it's like a tiny rebellion against the perfect repeat. The image reminds me of William Morris, but with a slightly darker, more mysterious edge. Like art, fabric design can be ambiguous, inviting us to see patterns and meaning in unexpected places.
