David Michael Hinnebusch’s painting, “Wading to Viks,” is made with bold strokes and a vibrant palette; it’s as if the act of painting itself is as important as the image. Looking closely, the texture jumps out, thick and juicy. You can almost feel the push and pull of the brush, especially in the way the waves are rendered. There’s a real physical energy to it, like the painting is breathing. The lower part of the painting dissolves into abstraction, with colours merging into each other creating space. There's something wonderfully playful about this painting. It reminds me a little of early work by Joan Mitchell, though Hinnebusch brings his own raw, unpolished sensibility to the table. For me, art isn’t about answering questions, it's more about creating a space where questions can be asked, without the need for a definitive answer.
