David Michael Hinnebusch made this roughly 56 x 71 cm painting called 'S P S' and I just want to dive right in! Just imagine Hinnebusch making this; he’s wrestling with a cacophony of color and form. It feels like he's trying to pin down something elusive. Look at that horse-like figure down there, tangled up with those angular marks, like a knight’s tale gone wild. What do you make of the table of words, and the pinks and reds? The surface is alive. It reminds me of Guston, or maybe late de Kooning, in the way he's unafraid to let the messiness of paint become the subject. It looks like a struggle to synthesize a bunch of conflicting elements. A feeling, a story, a sensation! In the end, art's about the conversation, right? Hinnebusch is in dialogue with a lineage of painters, those who dared to let the painting be a record of their searching.
