David Michael Hinnebusch made this painting, Crew, with visible brushstrokes and a vibrant palette. It's like watching a dance unfold. I imagine Hinnebusch standing before the canvas, lost in thought, then suddenly lunging forward with a loaded brush! The yellow backdrop feels like sunshine after the storm. There are figures, maybe people, maybe not. The surface of the canvas is alive. I get a sense of texture, of the paint's thickness, and a real physicality. That jagged stroke of black, slashing across the bottom…man, what does it mean? Probably nothing, but also everything. It reminds me a bit of Twombly's scrawls but with a punk rock edge. We’re all standing on the shoulders of giants, and Hinnebusch is in that same conversation, adding his voice to the mix. It's a reminder that painting isn't just about what you see, but how you feel, how you interpret, and how you connect with the messy, beautiful world around you.
