Curatorial notes

This is a photograph of an engraving by Jean Louis Bargignac, after Lucas Vorsterman's engraving of Peter Paul Rubens's depiction of the fall of the rebel angels. Here, radiant angels clash with monstrous figures, embodiments of chaos and rebellion. Note the angel's shield, a symbol of divine protection, deflecting the grotesque forms rising against it. This motif of celestial battle against demonic forces echoes through time, seen in ancient Mesopotamian depictions of gods battling chaos monsters, or even in the Greek Gigantomachy. Consider the psychological weight: the collective fear of disorder and the subconscious desire for cosmic harmony are powerfully evoked. The image stirs primal anxieties, yet offers reassurance through the triumph of the divine. Throughout history, this struggle resurfaces. From medieval morality plays to modern cinema, this archetype persists, illustrating humanity's eternal confrontation with its darker impulses.
