Friedrich III, the Wise, Elector of Saxony

Lucas Cranach the Elder painted this portrait of Friedrich III, the Wise, Elector of Saxony, in 1532. This image exists in the wake of the Reformation, a seismic shift that touched nearly every aspect of early 16th-century European life. Friedrich was a pivotal figure, a German prince who used his power to shield Martin Luther, and this work is much more than a depiction of nobility, it's a declaration of identity amidst religious and political upheaval.
