Biography
Lucas Cranach the Elder, born in Kronach in 1472 and died in Weimar on October 16th 1553, was a German Renaissance painter. His work is characterized by a distinctive style, evident in his use of vivid colors, detailed landscapes, and elongated figures, as seen in his famous “The Martyrdom of Saint Catherine.” He is best known for his portraits, religious works, and depictions of German folklore. Cranach was a close friend and supporter of Martin Luther, whose portrait he painted several times, and he was also a prolific painter of landscapes and allegories, often incorporating elements of German mythology and folklore into his work. He was a key figure in the development of Northern Renaissance art.
