Alfred Stieglitz made this photograph of Georgia O’Keeffe, probably with a large format camera, judging by the incredible detail. The tonal range moves across grays and blacks. The gaze is serious, almost confrontational. What I see in this portrait is a fellow artist thinking, making decisions. Her eyes have a focus, a concentration, and a kind of internal energy that's so familiar when you are in the studio. I bet Stieglitz saw this too, and that’s why he chose to capture it. Painters often seek out other painters. It's a community of seeing and making that transcends medium, where artists are in an ongoing conversation, exchanging ideas, and inspiring each other's creativity. It’s not just about looking at a painting, it's about understanding the choices, the thought processes, and the life experiences that inform the work. We're always looking for the human in the artwork and in the artist, hoping to find some connection to our own experiences.
