Willem Witsen created this etching, "Schaapherder met een hond achter zijn kudde," which translates to "Shepherd with a Dog Behind His Flock," during a time of immense social change in the Netherlands. As the country industrialized, the traditional agrarian lifestyle came under pressure. Witsen, coming from a wealthy family, had the privilege of choice. He was part of a movement of artists who turned to the countryside, imbuing rural life with a sense of nostalgia. This work presents a romanticized view of pastoral life through its quiet, intimate depiction of a shepherd and his flock at dusk. The print captures a humble scene, yet it subtly engages with broader issues of class and labor. The shepherd, a figure historically associated with the working class, is rendered with dignity. The landscape, rendered in muted tones, evokes a sense of timelessness and simplicity.
