Biography
Willem Witsen (1860-1923) was a Dutch painter and printmaker known for his realistic and often somber depictions of daily life. He was particularly drawn to working-class subjects and the lives of ordinary people, as seen in his painting of a man working in a workshop. His works often feature muted colors and a sense of atmosphere, creating a sense of realism and immediacy. Witsen was also a skilled printmaker, and he produced many woodcuts and etchings, often using his own techniques and interpretations of style to create a unique and expressive style. He was an important figure in the Hague School, a movement that emphasized realism and naturalism in painting.
