This small print, titled "Winter Landscape with Hut by Two Trees" is by Jerôme Tuyttens. He made it using etching, a printmaking process that uses acid to cut into a metal plate. The fine lines you see were created by carefully drawing through a waxy coating on the plate, exposing the metal beneath. Etching allowed Tuyttens to capture delicate details, like the bare branches of the trees and the thatched roof of the hut. The wintry scene, in turn, speaks to the hardships of rural life, particularly the vulnerability of those living close to the land, relying on manual labor for survival.
