William Unger created this engraving, “Holy Family with John the Baptist, Elizabeth, and Zechariah under an Apple Tree,” sometime in his lifetime, which spanned much of the 19th century. The apple tree, laden with fruit, dominates this scene. It’s a symbol heavy with the weight of Genesis, representing both temptation and knowledge. Yet, here, under its boughs, is the Holy Family, offering a visual paradox. We see John the Baptist as a child, reaching towards the infant Jesus, hinting at his future role. The apple appears across art history, from classical depictions of the Hesperides to Renaissance paintings of the Madonna and Child, each time modulating in meaning—a testament to its enduring symbolic power. Note the tender expressions and gestures. They evoke familial love and the dawning of spiritual understanding. It is a powerful invitation to viewers across generations to engage with these narratives.
