David Annesley made this painted steel sculpture "X-Act," which is on display at the Tate Modern. There's something so satisfying about the directness of the materials. It's almost like Annesley is thinking out loud with steel, bending and arranging it with an intuitive, almost playful sense of form. It reminds me of a Frank Stella, but with a more improvisational feel. Look at how the light plays across the painted surfaces. Each plane has its own texture and character, inviting you to trace its edges and feel its weight. But it's not heavy at all. It's light and dynamic. The way the different components come together feels both precise and slightly off-kilter, which is what makes it so engaging. Like art is a conversation, constantly evolving, and always leaving room for new voices and perspectives.
