Anthony Caro made this sculpture, Emma Dipper, out of painted steel. I love the industrial, almost architectural feel of the whole thing. Looking at it, I can imagine Caro in his studio, wrestling with these metal bars. Bending them, welding them, trying out different arrangements. It's all about finding that perfect balance, that sense of tension and release. See how some of the bars curve gently, while others shoot off at sharp angles? There's a real dynamism there, a sense of movement frozen in place. And then there are the colors - that muted brown and grey. They give the whole thing a kind of understated elegance. When I look at those leaning angles, they’re almost dancing. It's like he's taken these heavy, unyielding materials and made them feel light and airy. It reminds me of some of the constructions of Tatlin or the drawings of David Smith. Ultimately, it’s all about the conversation between artists across time, isn’t it? Each one building on what came before, pushing the boundaries of what's possible.
