Michael Bolus made this painted sculpture, called '2nd Sculpture,' but we don’t know exactly when, or with what! The sculpture’s playful arrangement of forms suggests a kind of dance of abstraction. The flat surfaces and linear elements remind me of Constructivist art, but with a looser, more improvisational feel. The orange-red paint is evenly applied, not thick or textured, which keeps the focus on the shapes and their interactions. Check out the way the light casts shadows, almost as if the shadows are additional components. One long, thin bar extends from a rectangular shape on the left, reaching out to join a chaotic cluster of line on the right. It is like a bridge, connecting one part of the composition to the other. Bolus's work shares an interest in geometric abstraction with artists like Anthony Caro, but with a more whimsical sensibility. Ultimately, this sculpture is about possibilities, about seeing the world in new ways.
