This "Untitled" sculpture was made by James Licini from thick blocks of Corten steel. Corten, often called weathering steel, is valued for its rusty appearance. It forms a protective layer when exposed to the elements, which slows further corrosion. This gives it a unique aesthetic quality but also highlights the industrial origins of the material. The sculpture's modular construction and use of repeated geometric forms emphasize its fabrication. You can see the marks of the cutting and welding processes. It is a dialogue between the controlled precision of industrial production and the unpredictable effects of time and environment on the steel surface. Ultimately, Licini challenges our perceptions of art by using industrial materials in a refined, sculptural context. He prompts us to reflect on the relationship between industrial production, natural processes, and artistic creation.
