Editor: Max Beckmann’s “Souvenir of Chicago,” created sometime in the mid-20th century, presents a really interesting still life in oil paint. The dark bars give me a sense of being trapped, or at least observing from a distance. What symbols do you notice in this work? Curator: The insistent black bars, which repeat as vertical geometries in the cityscape beyond, create a psychological space. Beckmann arrived in the States after fleeing Nazi Germany. Do you see the lily, too? It carries connotations of rebirth, but set against the ominous cityscape, its presence feels fraught. Editor: It's almost like the flower is a symbol of hope struggling against a harsh reality. I hadn't considered the personal history of the artist in relation to the subject. Curator: Consider how Beckmann used familiar imagery to create emotionally complex art. We find echoes of resilience, displacement, and the search for meaning in a new world. Editor: That really changes how I view this piece. Thank you!
