Kenneth Kilstrom’s ‘Percussion Head’ presents us with a vibrant, abstract face, a modern echo of ancient masks. Notice how Kilstrom fractures the visage into geometric forms, a nod to the Cubist exploration of breaking down objects into their essential shapes. This fragmentation reminds us of tribal masks, where the abstraction of the human face serves to amplify spiritual power and convey a sense of the otherworldly. The mask, throughout history, has been a potent symbol. From ancient Greek theatre to shamanistic rituals, masks serve as a bridge between the human and the divine, allowing the wearer to transcend their individual identity. Consider the prominent eye in this composition. It’s reminiscent of the ‘evil eye,’ a symbol found in many cultures as a protective force. The colours, too, strike a primal chord – the earthy tones evoke ancient pottery, linking the artwork to our collective past. The composition and colour palette engage viewers on a deep, subconscious level. ‘Percussion Head’ is a cyclical progression of visual symbols, resurfacing, evolving, and taking on new meanings in the modern era.
