Curatorial notes

This is Daniël Marot’s “Title Page: Nouveau Livre de Plaffonds,” an etching now held in the Rijksmuseum. Marot, born in France to a family of Protestant refugees, created this print as part of his broader pattern book intended for interior decorators and architects. The design reflects the opulence and theatricality of the Baroque style, popular among European courts, especially the French aristocracy. Yet, Marot’s own identity as a Huguenot informs this aesthetic. Having fled France due to religious persecution, Marot later found patronage with William of Orange, a Dutch leader who opposed Louis XIV's absolutist rule. Here, we see how identity and political context are interwoven into the very fabric of the art. As you look at the symmetry, and classical motifs, consider how Marot infuses these elements with a sense of emotional and political tension. The Baroque style, which often served to glorify monarchs, is here re-imagined through the eyes of an outsider who resisted such centralized power.
