Jean Le Pautre created this ceiling design with square and rectangular panels as an engraving. Born in Paris, Le Pautre was an ornamental designer, who was appointed designer and engraver to the king. During the 17th century, interior design was integral to expressing identity and status. Aristocrats decorated the interior of their houses with symbols, allegories, and classical references. The female figure reclining in the rectangular panel at the bottom of the engraving evokes a sense of sensuality that would have been appreciated and understood by the elite class. The cherubs surrounding the panel add a playful, yet sophisticated touch, referencing classical mythology. This design challenges us to consider how the aristocracy used art and design to construct and reinforce their identities. It also prompts us to reflect on the power dynamics inherent in the creation and consumption of such luxurious and symbolic objects.
