Franz Ertinger created this engraving of a tabernacle with the crowning of thorns, sometime around 1640, in the Netherlands. This print presents us with the devotional image of Christ’s Passion, framed by classical architectural elements and allegorical figures. We can consider this work as an example of the Counter-Reformation visual culture in the Low Countries. After the Protestant Reformation, the Catholic Church used art to reaffirm its doctrines, to inspire religious devotion and convey theological messages. The scene of Christ crowned with thorns, framed in a circle, reminds the viewer of Christ’s suffering for humanity. Angels and allegorical figures are included to provoke piety and reflection. The work demonstrates the enduring power of religious institutions to shape artistic production. We can consult sources, such as theological treatises and art historical studies, to understand better how these images functioned in their time and how they continue to affect us today.
