Bruno Munari created this tribute using geometric abstraction. Notice the symbolic interplay of the square motif, rendered here in both solid black and white. The square, in its essence, represents order, stability, and the earthly realm. But consider its evolution—from the ancient Roman grid layouts of cities, signifying structure and control, to the checkerboards in Renaissance paintings that symbolized the rational mind imposing order on chaos. These squares may harken back to the alchemist's table or the architect's grid, calling to mind the deep human impulse to categorize, and understand the world. The presence of the black square evokes the somber weight of the "black square" painted by Malevich, which aimed to represent the "zero degree" of painting, a break from the past. The bright square, on the other hand, might represent hope, a desire to create meaning in an otherwise incomprehensible world. Each viewer unconsciously projects desires and concerns onto the motifs, feeling the enduring tension between order and chaos.
