This painting, 378/63, by Rupprecht Geiger is composed of fields of red, pink, and orange. Looking at these blocks of intense colour, I can imagine the artist carefully layering the paint, maybe even masking off areas to keep those edges so crisp. You know, making a painting is like having a conversation. It's a call and response, a push and pull. I wonder what Geiger was thinking about as he worked. The surface of the canvas is smooth. It makes me think of other artists who are also investigating colour, like Rothko. I'm moved by how artists are constantly talking to each other, even across generations. Each brushstroke, each decision about colour and composition, builds upon what has come before. A painting isn't ever really finished. It is a moment of embodied expression, always open to new interpretations.
