This is an old postcard, addressed by hand with stamps and seals, probably made with ink and paper some time ago. I like to imagine Eugénie Clapier-Houchart sitting down to write this postcard, the pen scratching across the surface as words emerge, layer upon layer. What might Eugénie have been thinking as they composed this message? The placement of each word, the loops and curves of the letters, it all speaks to a moment in time, a personal intention. The texture of the paper, the weight of the ink - it's all part of how we experience the work. The loops of the ‘P’ in Zilcken are almost calligraphic. The piece feels like a fragment of a larger conversation, not just between the sender and receiver, but between artists across time. It reminds me of some of Dorothea Rockburne's parchment works. It makes you realize artists are always in dialogue, inspiring each other, even across generations. It embraces a kind of ambiguity, inviting us to bring our own interpretations to it.
