This is a postcard to Philip Zilcken, probably made with ink and paper. It feels like the work of a careful hand, but also one that embraces chance – you can see it in the way the writing almost dances on the page. The ink creates a beautiful contrast against the pale paper. Look at how Barrucand uses pressure, the varying line weights show confidence and a wonderful sensitivity to the writing implement. It's not just about conveying information; it's about the feeling of the marks themselves, like a painter thinking about the brushstrokes. There's a real physicality to this piece; you can almost feel the scratch of the pen. Each mark is a gesture, a trace of the artist's presence. There is something of Cy Twombly's calligraphic gestures here, a connection across time. I love how both artists treat language as a material, something to be felt as much as read.
