This necklace design was made by Mathieu Lauweriks, probably on paper, sometime in the early 20th century. It's not about a finished product, but about the bones of an idea and how it might be realised. The necklace is rendered in pencil with a fine, almost technical touch, as if engineering something precious. The radiating lines and perfect circles are like an aura around the piece. But what I like most is the pendant: a kind of heart-shaped form with concentric circles inside. It's as if the heart itself has layers, secrets, maybe even a hidden core. It’s all very delicate, drawn with a lightness of touch that reminds me of Paul Klee. You can feel the artist working through it, problem-solving, refining. And for me, that’s where the magic lies, in the making itself. Art is an ongoing conversation and Lauweriks reminds us that it can also be about process.
