Curatorial notes
Here we have Carel Adolph Lion Cachet’s, ‘Ontwerp voor het koepeldak van het schip 'Grotius'’ a sketch, probably in pencil, and perhaps other media too? It’s tough to tell from here, but I feel like Cachet is letting us in on his process. This is a working drawing, not for show. You can see the ghostly smudges and lines of earlier attempts, faint corrections which act as a record of his thought process. It’s such a delicate thing, this sketch, I can almost imagine the artist hunched over it, brow furrowed in concentration. Look at the octagon in the center; you can see how he has paid attention to the angles where they meet, as though this form contains the key to the entire project. I get a quiet thrill from this drawing - I wonder if you do too? It reminds me of the architectural drawings of Heimo Zobernig, maybe because both ask us to look beyond the surface.
