David Michael Hinnebusch created this artwork called "I Will Buy Art Today" using paint. Notice the large, somewhat unsettling eyes that dominate the composition. Eyes, often called the windows to the soul, have been potent symbols across cultures and eras. We can trace this motif back to ancient Egypt, where the Eye of Horus symbolized protection, royal power, and good health. Later, the single eye emerged in surrealist art to represent the subconscious. Here, the eyes seem to confront the viewer directly, probing into our own desires and anxieties about art and consumption. The gaze is intense, almost accusatory, stirring in us a complex mix of attraction and unease. This painting reminds us that symbols are never fixed, they are perpetually in flux, echoing and refracting through the corridors of time. They engage with our collective memory and subconscious, inviting a dialogue between the artwork, ourselves, and the vast, interconnected web of human expression.
