David Michael Hinnebusch painted 'Pilgrim Gun' with what looks like acrylic or maybe oil, it’s hard to tell through glass! There's something raw about the way Hinnebusch attacks the surface, layering colours like a kid with a new box of crayons – scribbles of yellow, slashes of red, punches of blue – all fighting for attention. It's like he’s wrestling with the image, trying to pin down something slippery and elusive. The texture is where it gets interesting. See how the paint clumps and pools in certain areas, while elsewhere it's thin and scratchy, like he wiped it away with a rag? It's all about the push and pull, the give and take. The lines aren't precious, they're thick, dark and kind of angry, like the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat. To me, 'Pilgrim Gun' is less about what it depicts and more about how it feels – urgent, messy, and alive.
