Checked Flag 2017

David Michael Hinnebusch made this painting, Checked Flag, using paint on canvas, and right away I'm intrigued by the way the image seems to come together, bit by bit, like a puzzle. There's a face here, but it's not just a face, it's a collection of marks and colours that somehow add up to more than the sum of their parts.
