David Michael Hinnebusch made this painting, titled "Marks on An Old Stone Wall," using gestural marks and a mixed colour palette. I can imagine Hinnebusch layering the paint, shifting and emerging through trial, error, and intuition. There's something about the black shapes, how they both obscure and reveal what’s beneath, that feels really active. The white drips, like tears or maybe just spilled paint, add to this sense of movement and transformation. It feels like Hinnebusch is in conversation with artists of the past, like Twombly, maybe even de Kooning. The materiality of the painting is really present here, you can almost feel the texture, the physicality of the medium. It's this kind of embodied expression, I think, that makes painting so powerful. It's not about fixed meanings, but about embracing ambiguity and uncertainty. Each gesture holds feeling, intention, and meaning. I see painting as an ongoing conversation and exchange of ideas across time, inspiring creativity.
