About this artwork

This is the second part of the Festa della Sensa, an etching made by Jost Amman. Notice the column, a prominent feature of the architectural design of the city. The column is a symbol that speaks volumes. As an emblem of stability, it has appeared time and again in varied contexts. In ancient Greece, it signified power and permanence, supporting temples dedicated to the gods. But even before that, in ancient Egypt, towering columns adorned the temples of Karnak, embodying royal authority. Over time, its meaning has shifted, transforming from a symbol of earthly power to an emblem of knowledge and stability. Think of the Pillars of Hercules, marking the edge of the known world, standing as a testament to human curiosity. The act of erecting a column is deeply rooted in our collective memory, reflecting our yearning for order and structure in a world of chaos. The recurring motif, therefore, reflects not merely conscious choices, but also the profound emotional connection we, as humans, share with enduring symbols of strength and cultural continuity.
