This is a marble statue of Aphrodite, the so-called Venus Genetrix, made by Kallimachos. Notice how the artist has sculpted the marble to create a dynamic interplay of draping and revealing forms. The goddess's body is partially veiled, which invites a reading of classical notions of beauty and modesty. Kallimachos destabilizes the static form traditionally associated with sculpture. He achieves a sense of movement and lightness by employing techniques of carving which play with light and shadow across the folds of the drapery. Semiotically, the folds and the way the garment clings to the body act as signs that both conceal and highlight the erotic undercurrent of the sculpture. The fragmented state of the sculpture further contributes to its semiotic charge. The absence of the head and limbs invites speculation about the complete form and enhances our focus on the remaining structural elements. This emphasis on form over explicit content allows for a rich interpretative experience.
