Alfred Stieglitz made this gelatin silver print of Georgia O'Keeffe. Photography, by its nature, captures a moment, but also involves complex processes. The gelatin silver process was popular then, relying on the light sensitivity of silver halides, suspended in gelatin and coated on paper, allowing for detailed tonal ranges. Stieglitz, a champion of photography as fine art, chose this medium to convey the essence of his subject. The tonal range, from deep blacks to delicate grays, captures the textures of skin and fabric. Through the lens, Stieglitz captures O’Keeffe’s likeness, but also elevates her to an icon, in a collaboration charged with artistic and personal intensity. By mastering the gelatin silver process, Stieglitz imbued the photograph with layers of meaning, beyond mere representation. It becomes a testament to the artistry inherent in photographic craft.
