This is a photograph of Georgia O’Keeffe, made by Alfred Stieglitz. The tones are soft, almost like a drawing. I imagine Stieglitz, with his camera, circling, trying to capture something of the essence of O’Keeffe. He’s looking for that particular angle, that light, that shadow, that will reveal something true. You can see the way the light catches the curve of her cheek, the sharpness of her gaze. It's a record of a moment but also a kind of collaboration, a dance between photographer and subject. O'Keeffe, with her gaze fixed, reminds me of a Brancusi sculpture. The artist, here, is still and solid. She could be made of stone. The longer I look, the more I see a conversation between these two artists, each influencing the other's work. It makes you realize, art isn't made in a vacuum. It’s a process of exchange, of looking and responding, that links us all together.
