Leonetto Cappiello made this poster sometime in the early twentieth century to advertise mineral water, and what strikes me is how the image seems to come alive, like a performance. The palette is limited, grounded in warm reds and yellows, which gives it a kind of earthy, vital energy, while the cool blue-tinged white of the water creates a dramatic contrast. Cappiello uses color to model the figure, but there's a looseness to his linework that lets the image breathe. Look at the water cascading from the jug: the artist gives it volume and movement, almost as if the water itself is a character, flowing with a life of its own. I love the bold graphic quality, but also the hints of Art Nouveau curves in the figure's pose. There’s something about this poster that reminds me of Jules Cheret, another poster artist who celebrated the joy of modern life. But Cappiello has his own distinct style, with a stronger emphasis on simplified forms and vibrant, expressive color. Art is a conversation, and Cappiello brings his own unique voice to the dialogue.
