Hans Borrebach made this drawing of Lony sitting in a car with a man and woman with ink and wash on paper. It's the lines that grab me in this piece – so bold and confident, really owning the space. The limited use of color, just this pale blue wash, gives it a kind of dreamlike quality. It’s like Borrebach is saying, ‘I don't need a whole rainbow to tell you a story’. I love the way the ink defines the forms, thick in some places, thinner in others, and how the blue pools and blends. It's so easy to see the hand of the artist at work, the quick decisions, the little variations in pressure, you can almost feel the artist's hand moving across the page. There's something about this trio and their easy familiarity that puts me in mind of Kirchner's street scenes. You know, the way he captures the energy of a fleeting moment? It’s a reminder that art is just a conversation, an endless back-and-forth between artists, across time.
