Eddy de Smet created this drawing of a classroom scene using ink and watercolor. The composition is structured by strong vertical and horizontal lines, creating a sense of order, while the subtle use of colour draws our attention to the figures. The lines both define and divide the space, contributing to a narrative that explores the relationship between knowledge, authority and individual expression. Notice how the teacher is positioned at the back of the class, almost fading into the background, while the pupil, Dikkie, confidently occupies the foreground. This deliberate use of perspective and scale prompts us to consider the shifting power dynamics within the classroom. The newspaper Dikkie is holding can be seen as a signifier of contemporary discourse, questioning the traditional modes of knowledge and representation. The sketch destabilizes established values and categories, inviting us to question the structure of education and the place of individual voice within it. It's a wonderful example of how formal elements can express and invite a larger social commentary.
