Aldo Mondino made "Qui c'est moi" with chocolate, and honestly, the impermanence of it all just makes me want to dive right in. Look at the horizontal bands of color and texture! Some parts have that perfect, hard-edged geometry, and then you've got these soft, almost oozing textures. It’s like Mondino is thinking about Sol LeWitt and then going, nah, let's get messy. I like the way he’s got one medium, chocolate, doing so many different things. The color palette is so wild and playful. Is that a heart shape? It’s both childish and sophisticated, like a mirage of art history seen through a candy shop window. Mondino reminds me of a cross between Dieter Roth and a kid in a sweetshop. He makes you question the whole idea of preciousness in art. Is it profound? Is it ridiculous? Maybe it's both, and that's the point.
