This is 'Composition in Orange and Blue-Green' by Johannes Itten. The medium looks like watercolour, so I imagine him hunched over a table letting the colours bleed and run. What's interesting here is that this piece feels like a conversation, not just between orange and blue, but also between Klee and maybe, just maybe, the grids of Agnes Martin. The colours are so translucent, and they are really controlled. Look at how each little mark is carefully contained within a little rectangle. It’s like he's building a wall, or maybe a city. I wonder, what does this colour mean to him? Did he mix it himself? It’s so satisfying to put one colour next to another. Does one cancel the other out or do they vibrate and sing? Painting is like an endless conversation, right? We’re always looking at each other’s work, thinking, 'Oh, I want to try that' or 'What if I did this instead?'
