Gunther Gerzso created this painting with shades of green and blue, hard-edged forms that fit together like puzzle pieces. I love the way his forms are both architectural and organic at the same time. Did he make maquettes, little sculptural models first? Or did he just go at it, intuitively, adjusting here and there? The build-up of color on the right side has a subtle, almost moss-like quality. I see these greens and blues mixing and merging in unpredictable ways. There’s this one light-blue rectangle, slightly off-center. It has this tiny, vertical dash inside it. What's that about? It seems like such a small detail, but it changes everything! Like a secret, personal message he left for himself, or for us. I get a sense of Gerzso being in conversation with painters like Torres-Garcia, maybe even Mondrian, but doing his own thing, finding his own way of composing space and form. It's a reminder that painting is an ongoing conversation, a call and response across generations.
