Shepherd’s Purse
Listen to curator's interpretation
Curatorial notes
Editor: This is Michael Landy's "Shepherd's Purse," a delicate line drawing. It's so simple, almost stark. What do you see in its presentation? Curator: I see a deliberate commentary on value. By isolating this common weed and presenting it in a fine art context, Landy challenges our perception of what is worthy of attention and, indeed, preservation within institutional walls. It prompts us to consider the social hierarchies inherent in artistic representation. Editor: So, you're saying it questions the exclusivity of art itself? Curator: Precisely. And also, perhaps, the cultural biases that elevate certain subjects while neglecting others. How does this relate to Landy’s larger body of work? Editor: That’s fascinating. I hadn't considered the social implications of depicting something so ordinary. Curator: Indeed. It’s a potent reminder of the power dynamics at play in the art world.
