Editor: Here we have Michael Landy’s ‘Shepherd’s Purse 4’ from the Tate Collection. It’s quite delicate, almost ghostly, in its rendering. What structural elements strike you most when you view this work? Curator: The composition is rigorously minimal. The lone plant, centered, creates a visual tension against the vast white space. Note how Landy employs line to define form, yet avoids closure, suggesting incompleteness. Editor: Incompleteness? Curator: Observe the roots, seemingly sketched rather than fully realized. This invites speculation: is it about fragility, the ephemeral nature of life, or perhaps the deconstruction of botanical illustration itself? Editor: I hadn't considered the incomplete lines as a deliberate choice. It adds another layer to its meaning. Curator: Indeed. By focusing on these formal qualities, we unlock potential interpretations beyond a simple depiction of nature. Editor: Thanks, I will never look at a plant drawing the same way again.

Shepherd’s Purse 4 is one of a series of etchings in Landy’s portfolio Nourishment. The portfolio was published by Paragon Press in an edition of thirty-seven plus six artist’s proofs; the set owned by Tate is number nine in the series. These prints were first exhibited at Maureen Paley Interim Art, London between December 2002 and January 2003 alongside several related etchings produced in an edition of six which were sold individually.
