Curator: Michael Landy's "Shepherd's Purse 2," held here at the Tate, presents a delicate rendering of a common plant. The dimensions of the image are 675 x 495 mm. Editor: It feels almost ghostly, doesn’t it? Stark, yet so fragile. I’m immediately drawn to the way the plant seems isolated, almost vulnerable, against the vast white space. Curator: Indeed. Landy’s work often engages with themes of destruction and decay. This drawing, seemingly simple, could be a commentary on the ephemerality of life, even in the most resilient of weeds. Editor: Exactly. The shepherd’s purse is such a ubiquitous plant, often overlooked. Highlighting it in this way feels like a political act, a subtle nod to the beauty and importance of the marginalized. It makes me think about environmental justice and the power of the overlooked. Curator: Yes, and considering Landy's broader body of work, including his "Break Down" project, this drawing becomes a poignant reminder of our own consumer culture and its impact on the natural world. Editor: It's incredible how a simple botanical drawing can spark such complex reflections. I leave feeling both contemplative and a little bit uneasy. Curator: Agreed. It underscores how art can provoke even with quiet gestures.

Shepherd’s Purse 2 is one of a series of etchings in Landy’s portfolio Nourishment. The portfolio was published by Paragon Press in an edition of thirty-seven plus six artist’s proofs; the set owned by Tate is number nine in the series. These prints were first exhibited at Maureen Paley Interim Art, London between December 2002 and January 2003 alongside several related etchings produced in an edition of six which were sold individually.
