This small bronze oval, “An Assembly of Gods [reverse],” was made by Master IO.F.F. sometime before 1528. The composition presents a cluster of figures, rendered in low relief, which creates a sense of depth within its limited space. The artist has cleverly used the circular format to frame a classical scene. Notice how the arrangement of bodies—some seated, others standing—forms a dynamic yet contained composition. The figures emerge from the bronze surface, their forms defined by subtle gradations of light and shadow. This use of light not only sculpts the figures but also seems to animate them, giving a sense of movement and life. The gathering of gods might be seen as a microcosm of society itself, reflecting a structural organization inherent in both divine and human realms. The circular form and its cyclical nature, embodies a structural understanding of life, death, and rebirth.
