This photograph of the Koor van de Plaskerk te Raalte was made by an anonymous photographer, using monochrome film, so it’s an image of tonal variation. It’s so subtle, the softest transitions from light to dark. You can sense the process of waiting for the right moment, the right light, to capture the architectural detail. The photograph’s surface is smooth, which contrasts with the rough texture of the brick plaza and the tiled roof, where the tones deepen. Look at the top of the steeple, the way it pierces the sky. It's kind of funny how the light and shadow seem to flatten out the facade of the building, making it seem like a stage set, or a cardboard cut-out of a building. This photo reminds me a little bit of Bernd and Hilla Becher’s documentary style, but without the precision. It's more romantic, maybe? All photography is about seeing something and making a choice to record it, and this one has a lot to say.
