This is a photo of Gezicht op het koor van de Joriskerk te Borculo, made at some point by an anonymous artist. It looks like a simple, straightforward capture, but simplicity can be deceiving, right? The tones here are muted, a classic black and white photo, which encourages us to focus on form and texture. The facade is worn, with chunks missing, revealing the layers beneath. These are all marks of time, like wrinkles on skin, and they make me think about the building's history, the hands that built it, and the weather it has withstood. There is a pile of rubble in front of the building. Does this make the work about the past or the future? I think of Bernd and Hilla Becher, with their typologies of industrial structures – that clinical approach to architecture. This, though, feels more personal, more about decay and change. Art isn’t about answers, it’s about questions, about seeing the world in a slightly different way each time.
