This is a photograph of Gezicht op de Joriskerk te Borculo, probably taken with a large format camera, maybe around the turn of the century. It has that soft sepia tone. I can imagine the photographer, whoever they were, setting up the shot, composing the church, and waiting for the light to be just right. I wonder if they had to wait long for those little kids in white dresses to stand still! There’s something very still and calming about the image. It reminds me of the work of early photographers like Eugene Atget, who documented the streets of Paris with such care and attention. Photography is a process of capturing light and time, and in this image, the photographer has captured a moment of history. It’s like a conversation between the photographer, the subject, and us, the viewers. It’s a quiet conversation, but a meaningful one nonetheless.
